Now · Researching sound & well-being in healing spaces

Designing how spaces sound, and how they heal.

I'm Shakila — an interior architect and researcher studying the effect of sonic environments on patients' psychological well-being — and a national-level musician, composer and builder of web apps.

Sonic environments & patient well-being

Master's thesis in Interior Architecture (SMUCT) investigating how the acoustic environment of in-patient areas in Bangladesh relates to patients' stress and anxiety — with a case study at Bangladesh Medical University, Dhaka.

Journal paper

Turning the thesis findings into a peer-reviewed article for a health-environments design journal, while extending the dataset with more wards and equivalent-level (LAeq) measurements.

Next study

Unplugged music & restoration

A planned study on whether calm, live acoustic guitar sessions reduce stress and headache and improve sleep — born from listeners telling me how they felt after hearing me play.

02 / Research direction

Where my research is heading.

My doctoral interest sits where architecture, acoustics and health meet: how the sound of a healing space shapes the people inside it, and how design can change that.

Q1

How do the acoustic conditions of in-patient wards relate to patients' stress and anxiety?

Q2

Which spatial and material design decisions measurably improve a ward's soundscape?

Q3

Can calm, live music work as a restorative layer within healthcare and everyday spaces?

        07 / Personal

        Hi, I'm Shakila.

I grew up between sketchbooks and songs. Architecture taught me to look at space; music taught me to listen to it. My research sits right between the two — asking what the rooms we heal in sound like, and how that sound feels.

I'm a professional musician and composer who has performed on television and national stages. Today I work full-time as a cultural coordinator, build apps in the evenings, and keep a guitar within reach. I speak Bengali and English, and I'm learning German.
